The smallest ophthalmological endoscope

An endoscope is a device that allows to observe the inner lives of organisms or technical cavities. Firstly that technique was developed for diagnostical uses on humans. Nowadays, we are able to perform minimally invasive operations on humans, animals or a variety of technical devices.

A lot has happened since the Frankfurt doctor Philipp Bozzini constructed the first medical endoscope in 1806. Mainly used in gynaecology first, the endoscope quickly spreaded to all medical sectors. More and more flexibility was asked until the first fully flexible model got introduced in 1931. In the year 2000 in Paris, we then witnessed the first usage of a capsule-based endoscope. This one-way camera in form of a pill wanders down the digestive system and takes a constant flow of images to analyse.

Today we can scan nearly every organ in our body with endoscopy. For example Feinwerkoptik Zünd has produced an objective with a diameter of only 0.5 mm for an endoscope which is used for complex eye surgery.

About our customers and partners

Our optical components are particular, individualized parts that always belong to a larger product. For example, we develop and produce a lens for an endoscope, which is installed in an assembly. But how does that cooperation work?

How an image is created from optical components

Endoscopes make it possible to look inside the body without performing major invasive procedures. But how does an endoscope work? René Zünd explains which optical components are necessary and what task they fulfil.

The Future of Cameras in Medicine

Minimally invasive interventions are standard in many medical fields – from knee arthroscopies to colonoscopies. They require using ultra-modern, tiny cameras that provide insights into the body. Feinwerkoptik Zünd is an expert in developing and producing these cameras, especially their lenses. CEO René Zünd tells us how the use of cameras in medicine could develop in the future with even more advanced technology. So how small can cameras become?
